Frozen Commons: Knowledge Gathering Board Game
The Frozen Commons: Knowledge Gathering Board Game was presented on March 26, 2025, at the Indigenous Pavilion during the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) 2025 in Boulder. Team members of the Frozen Commons project led the presentation.
This educational board game uses gamification to explore governance challenges in Arctic regions that depend on snow, ice, and permafrost. In Knowledge Gathering, players simulate fieldwork in remote Arctic locations—traveling to communities, sharing knowledge, collecting samples, and conducting interviews. The goal is to be the first to gather all the information needed to complete a research mission, learning about collaboration and decision-making along the way.
Creators
The game was developed by Stanislav Podusenko, Mariia Kuklina, Vera Kuklina, and Andrey Petrov.
Public engagement
During the presentation, the creators introduced the game and guided participants through its rules and gameplay. A diverse audience—including children, scientists, and artists—joined in and found the experience both engaging and educational. The interactive session at the Indigenous Pavilion highlighted the game’s potential as a creative tool for learning about Arctic research and community collaboration.
